The Modern Fairytales and The Power of Storytelling

Writer's picture: DianeDiane

Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools that we have to communicate and learn, evolve and grow. For more than 27,000 years, storytelling has shaped humanity. Every community has developed their faith, traditions and even superstitions based on stories and legends. We use fairytales to teach our children and make them understand the good and the bad, the values and the morals that form every child and turn him into a successful adult.

In the last 20 years, our life has changed dramatically due to the internet. We are all linked and our words and messages travel instantly from one part of the world to the other. There are no more borders and our stories also travel much faster. It seems now that we share the same stories, the same ideas, even if our backgrounds are so different and our ancient legends have different plots. So, what about our old fairytales? Shouldn't they change as well?

Children nowadays have access to information and develop faster than 30 years ago. It is important to give them the right stories. There are classical fairytales that will forever be part of our culture, like Snow White and Cinderella, but we also need to create and share inspirational narratives in which little girls can save themselves too and don't need to wait for a prince. There are writers who create now these stories, but will they stand the test of time?

The modern fairytales should reflect the modern world. An evolved universe, where both good and bad still exist, but good is becoming more and more powerful. "Good" has a strong voice and we have more control of the stories that we hear and share. We can now access instantly all the stories ever told. We can choose what to read and we can learn about other people too, other experiences and stories that in the past didn't stand a chance to show up on TV or be taught in schools.

It is so inspiring to learn about great people who are making a difference in their community and the world. Their stories turn into modern fairytales and their stories are heard by our children. Together we will shape a better future, where magical things can happen too!
